imp_fits.wip
  • 8-bit B & W unsigned 2 or more axis NASA FITS images
  • 16-bit B & W signed 2 or more axis NASA FITS images
  • 32-bit B & W signed 2 or more axis NASA FITS images
  • 32-bit B & W floating point 2 or more axis NASA FITS images
  • 64-bit B & W floating point 2 or more axis NASA FITS images

Since many FITS files contain data that is outside the dynamic range of WinImages F/x and WinImages Morph's 8-bit channel depth, the Importer examines the file for the total dynamic range represented and then scales that linearly and proportionally into the range 0-255 as greyscale. For instance, if a FITS file contained values that ranged from 20,000 to -10,000, the Importer will scale the data so that -10,000 is zero, 5,000 is 128, and 20,000 is 255. In this way, the Importer uses WinImages F/x's entire available dynamic range to represent the data. It is then often useful to apply WinImages F/x's channel map operator with a custom palette to further help visualize the file data.

Tip:

...a little something from the propeller-heads at Black Belt Systems
There are many types of FITS files that are not loadable using this Importer. Many FITS files contain data that is not image data such as one dimensional tables, or even plain text. The Importer will correctly fail to load these files.

Note:

Keep this in mind...
If you would like to see support for a particular file format, please have the company responsible for that file format contact us, and we will see to it that the appropriate development materials are made available to them at no cost.

We do create Importers for file formats ourselves, and you can request that we support a file format for you also. In that case, we need the following from you:

  • At least two sample images in each variant of the format you want supported. Variants are changes such as different bit depths, colormapped or not, compressed or not.

  • As much information about the file format as you can provide. The more you provide, the more likely it is we will be able to create an importer for the format.

  • In the (very rare) case of formats that are proprietary formats for which the developers charge a fee for companies such as ourselves adding the format (such as Kodak's Photo CD or Summus's Wavelet Images), you will be responsible for the cost the development rights.
